Sun, Pebbles & Crystal Clear Water: Your Ultimate Beach Guide to the Makarska Riviera
The Makarska Riviera is world-famous for one thing above all: its incomparable beaches. When the massive Biokovo mountain range towers in the background and the sea shimmers in every shade from turquoise to deep blue, you know your vacation has truly begun. But not all beaches on the Riviera are created equal. Each stretch of coast has its own unique character.
Whether you are looking for family action, romantic togetherness, or a hidden cove for dreaming—we’ll show you where to find your perfect spot in the sun.

1. Makarska City Beach (Donja Luka) – The Beating Heart
This is the main beach, curving like a horseshoe along the city. This is where the tourist heart of the Riviera beats strongest.
- Vibe: Lively, cheerful, and constantly in motion.
- Best for: Families with children (due to shallow waters and aqua parks), teenagers, and anyone who loves being in the thick of things. There are endless water sports here, from parasailing to jet skiing.
- Shade: Dense pine forests reach almost to the water's edge, offering natural shade—perfect for escaping the midday heat.

2. Punta Rata in Brela – The Icon of the Adriatic
Often named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Punta Rata is the quintessential Croatian postcard motif. The famous "Brela Stone," a pine-covered rock island just off the coast, is the local landmark.
- Vibe: Exclusive, aesthetic, and breathtakingly beautiful.
- Best for: Couples, hobby photographers, and nature lovers. The water here is so clear that boats appear to be floating on air. It is the perfect place for a romantic day at the beach.
- Tip: Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the magical silence and the best light for photos before the day-trip tourists arrive.

3. Nugal Beach (Osejava Nature Park) – The Hidden Paradise
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, you have to hike. Nugal Beach is tucked away in the Osejava Nature Park between Makarska and Tučepi and is only accessible by foot (a 30–40 minute hike) or by boat.
- Vibe: Wild, untouched, free, and peaceful.
- Best for: Adventurers, romantics, and naturists (Nugal is a well-known clothing-optional beach, though clothed bathers are also welcome). The beach is surrounded by high cliffs, providing a spectacular backdrop.
- Important: There are no bars or toilets here. Be sure to bring enough water and food for the day.

4. Tučepi & Podgora – The Family Favorites
The neighboring towns of Makarska offer miles of gently sloping pebble beaches that transition seamlessly into one another.
- Vibe: Relaxed, family-friendly, and completely "Pomalo" (taking it slow).
- Best for: Families with small children and long-term vacationers. The promenades are lined with ice cream parlors, small shops, and restaurants. You can spend the entire day here—from a morning swim to dinner at sunset—without ever needing your car.

Thirst Quenchers: What do people love to drink at the beach?
A beach day on the Riviera isn't complete without the right refreshments. Croatians love social and cooling drinks.
- Kava (Coffee): The most important drink, regardless of the time of day. An Iced Coffee or a Nescafe Frappé at a beach bar is the perfect way to start the day.
- Ožujsko or Karlovačko: The classic Croatian lager beers. Served ice-cold, they are the ultimate thirst quenchers after a long swim.
- Gemischt (Gemišt): A very popular refreshment, especially among locals. It is a mix of white wine (often Graševina) and sparkling mineral water. It’s perfect because it’s lighter than drinking pure wine in the heat.
- Cedevita: A vitamin drink that comes in powder form (lemon, orange, or lime). It is mixed fresh with water and is a favorite for children and those driving.
- Kokteli (Cocktails): As the sun begins to set, many beach bars (such as Buba in Makarska or Southern Comfort in Brela) transform into chill-out zones. A Mojito or a local Rakija cocktail accompanied by lounge music is the perfect transition into the evening.

The Makarska Riviera has a matching beach for everyone. The secret is not to limit yourself to just one spot. Perhaps rent a small boat for a day or take the cycling path along the coast to discover your own personal favorite cove.
No matter where you end up: the water is magical everywhere
