Makarska – My Heartbeat on May 1st: A Local’s Guide to the Riviera
Written by one who breathes the salt in the air and calls the Biokovo stone home. The air has changed. You can smell it—the broom blooming on the slopes, the cool, awakening sea, and the pine needles catching the morning sun. Tomorrow is May 1st. For us here in Makarska, this isn’t just another holiday. It is a day where we honor the work of the hands and the peace of the soul.As someone who has dedicated countless hours to developing and designing a project for this town independently, I often view Makarska through a lens of both tradition and innovation. I currently hold 20 unique, unreleased upgrades for my work—features that no one else has—but the reality of life here means I simply lack the time to implement them right now. But maybe that is for the best. Some things, like the beauty of this coastline, are perfect just as they are.If you are here on May 1st, 2026, forget your schedule. We have a word here that you need to embrace if you want to understand our way of life: Polako. It means "slowly," "with ease," "no rush."Here is my personal guide on how to spend the day as we do—with heart, mind, and a smile.

Experiencing Makarska: A Deep Dive into the Dalmatian Way of Life
Makarska is far more than just a seaside resort on the Adriatic. It is a place where the massive, white limestone peaks of the Biokovo Mountains plunge almost vertically into the deep blue sea. If you take a full day to explore, you will experience a journey ranging from historical tranquility and vibrant beach life to one of the most spectacular sunsets on the entire coast.

Makarska Beyond the Beach: A Walk Through the Old Town and Kalalarga
I have to confess something: When I first arrived in Makarska, I was like everyone else – hypnotized by the Riviera, the turquoise sea, and the gigantic Biokovo mountain behind it. But what truly enchanted me was something completely different: Kalalarga.

The 10 Most Beautiful Beaches of the Makarska Riviera – From Family-Friendly Bays to Hidden Paradises
The Makarska Riviera, nestled at the foot of the impressive Biokovo mountain range, is simply synonymous with crystal-clear sea, pebble beaches, and that special shade from the pine forests. Of course, everyone knows the famous Punta Rata in Brela, but what really makes this area magical are those tiny hidden coves that only the locals truly know about. Whether you're traveling with family, planning a romantic getaway for two, or just looking to escape the hustle and bustle for a while, the beaches at the foot of Biokovo simply never disappoint. The Riviera stretches along roughly 53 kilometers of Adriatic coastline, from Brela in the north to Gradac in the south. This narrow but incredibly picturesque coast is renowned for its long pebble beaches, turquoise waters, and dense pine forests that provide natural shade. No wonder it's been counted among the most attractive destinations on the Croatian coast for decades. The heart of the Riviera is naturally Makarska itself, but places like Baška Voda, Tučepi, Podgora, and Živogošće each have their own distinct charm. Makarska is known for its lively waterfront promenade, the charming old town, and rich cultural heritage – but also for its nightlife, numerous restaurants, konobas, and cafés. In summer, the town really pulses with energy, and events like the Makarska Cultural Summer, fishermen's evenings, and open-air concerts draw both tourists and locals alike. I particularly love the seaside promenade Kalelarga and the Sv. Petar peninsula with its lighthouse and small church – perfect for romantic strolls and a moment of peace away from the city buzz. But what really sets the Riviera apart is the sheer variety of activities on offer: hiking, cycling, water sports, diving, boat trips to the nearby islands of Hvar and Brač. Nature lovers can explore the Osejava park forest, discover hidden coves, and find viewpoints, while foodies can look forward to local specialties, fresh fish, olive oil, and domestic wine.Tourists and locals alike simply love the Makarska Riviera for its authentic beauty, diversity, and the hospitality of its people. Here you can find tranquility in hidden bays, but also enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the popular beaches. Whether you're after relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, the Riviera offers everything and then some – probably more than you can fit into one vacation.

Pakline & The Napoleon Road: A Journey Through Time in the Biokovo Mountains
The hike to Pakline is far more than just a challenging climb; it's an encounter with Dalmatian history. As you ascend the steep slopes of Biokovo, you walk in the footsteps of a bygone era. A significant portion of the trail follows the so-called Napoleon Road. Construction began in the early 19th century during the brief French occupation of Dalmatia. The goal was to create a connection across the mountains. What fascinates hikers today is the construction: Without modern machinery, enormous limestone blocks were precisely stacked to create a consistent gradient. Although the project was never completed after the French withdrew, the remaining sections still bear witness to an impressive architectural vision. The contrast between the rugged natural landscape and the man-made, symmetrical curves is a truly unique sight.

10 Things You Must Do in Makarska – The Ultimate Bucket List
The Riva is far more than just a walkway—it is the stage of local life. Here, the scent of salty seawater mingles with the aroma of freshly brewed espresso and grilled fish. A stroll along the palm-lined promenade is an absolute must. Observe the bustling activity of fishing boats in the early morning or the gentle swaying of luxury yachts in the evening. A photograph set against the backdrop of deep blue waters, white stone houses, and the towering Biokovo mountains captures the true essence of the Riviera in a single frame.

After exploring the tranquility and the awakening of spring in Part 1, we now dive deep into what makes Easter in Makarska so authentic: the Croatian way of life, the sacred sites, and a festive feast that bids a final farewell to winter.⛪ A Place of Power: Pilgrimage to VepricIf you are in Makarska during the Easter holidays, a visit to the Vepric Sanctuary is almost a must. Located on the western outskirts of the city, this pilgrimage site is reminiscent of the Grotto of Lourdes. The Atmosphere: Especially during Easter, a very special energy permeates this place. The sanctuary is carved into the rock and surrounded by dense pine forests. It is silent, cool, and peaceful. How to Behave: Vepric is a place of prayer. Locals come here to light candles and pause for reflection. Respectful, quiet behavior is a matter of course. Part 1: Easter in Makarska – The Riviera Awakens in Perfect Tranquility
Easter is undoubtedly the most magical time to visit the Makarska Riviera. While large parts of Europe are still caught in the grey grip of late winter with rain lashing against the windows, something wonderful is happening here on the Croatian coast: the Adriatic coast awakens with a primal force of colors and scents. It is a time for absolute regeneration, the first truly warming rays of sunshine, and a deep-seated spirituality that comes alive in Croatian traditions. But the most beautiful thing about Easter 2026? It is the calm before the storm.
