The 10 Most Beautiful Beaches of the Makarska Riviera – From Family-Friendly Bays to Hidden Paradises

The Makarska Riviera, nestled at the foot of the impressive Biokovo mountain range, is simply synonymous with crystal-clear sea, pebble beaches, and that special shade from the pine forests. Of course, everyone knows the famous Punta Rata in Brela, but what really makes this area magical are those tiny hidden coves that only the locals truly know about. Whether you're traveling with family, planning a romantic getaway for two, or just looking to escape the hustle and bustle for a while, the beaches at the foot of Biokovo simply never disappoint.

The Riviera stretches along roughly 53 kilometers of Adriatic coastline, from Brela in the north to Gradac in the south. This narrow but incredibly picturesque coast is renowned for its long pebble beaches, turquoise waters, and dense pine forests that provide natural shade. No wonder it's been counted among the most attractive destinations on the Croatian coast for decades.

The heart of the Riviera is naturally Makarska itself, but places like Baška Voda, Tučepi, Podgora, and Živogošće each have their own distinct charm. Makarska is known for its lively waterfront promenade, the charming old town, and rich cultural heritage – but also for its nightlife, numerous restaurants, konobas, and cafés. In summer, the town really pulses with energy, and events like the Makarska Cultural Summer, fishermen's evenings, and open-air concerts draw both tourists and locals alike. I particularly love the seaside promenade Kalelarga and the Sv. Petar peninsula with its lighthouse and small church – perfect for romantic strolls and a moment of peace away from the city buzz.

But what really sets the Riviera apart is the sheer variety of activities on offer: hiking, cycling, water sports, diving, boat trips to the nearby islands of Hvar and Brač. Nature lovers can explore the Osejava park forest, discover hidden coves, and find viewpoints, while foodies can look forward to local specialties, fresh fish, olive oil, and domestic wine.

Tourists and locals alike simply love the Makarska Riviera for its authentic beauty, diversity, and the hospitality of its people. Here you can find tranquility in hidden bays, but also enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the popular beaches. Whether you're after relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, the Riviera offers everything and then some – probably more than you can fit into one vacation.

Our Top 10 Beaches of the Makarska Riviera

The Makarska Riviera is truly a jewel of the Adriatic, and beyond the famous beaches you see on postcards, there are these hidden coves that only true insiders find. Here's my personal guide for the perfect beach vacation, whether with family, a partner, or seeking adventure.

1. Punta Rata, Brela

Punta Rata is, for me, the absolute symbol of Brela and one of the most famous beaches in all of Croatia. The pebble beach with its iconic "Brela Stone" rising from the sea, on which even a hundred-year-old pine tree grows, is simply unmistakable. The dense pine forest surroundings provide plenty of natural shade, making this beach especially ideal for families with kids or sun-avoiders like myself. The entry into the sea is shallow and gentle, so it's no problem even for non-swimmers.

You can get there by car – the larger parking lot sits above the beach, and from there you walk down. By bike, you can ride to the beginning of the pedestrian zone and continue on foot from there. The beach is spacious, but during peak season it can get crowded. Besides the natural ambiance, there are various amenities: sun loungers, umbrellas, showers, water sports, and lifeguard service. Along the promenade and at the beach, you'll find many cafés and restaurants – I especially recommend Beach Bar Punta Rata for a refreshment and Restaurant Punta Rata for lunch or dinner.

I remember the first time I stood there, looking at that famous stone with the little pine tree growing out of it, and thinking this is exactly what Mediterranean paradise looks like. The water color shifts from deep blue to turquoise to almost transparent near the shore, and the pebbles under your feet are smooth and warm. It's the kind of place that makes you want to stay all day, just alternating between swimming, napping under the pines, and grabbing a cold drink at the beach bar.

1. Punta Rata, Brela

2. Podrače, Brela

Podrače is a smaller but all the more picturesque pebble beach, nestled between rocks and greenery. The water here is simply turquoise, and the natural shade from the pines makes even the hottest days bearable. The entry is shallow and safe, so great for kids, but the peaceful atmosphere also attracts couples looking for some quiet time.

Parking is available nearby, but those spots fill up quickly during the season. You can also get there by bike, though the final access to the beach is a pedestrian zone. At the beach, there are sun loungers and umbrellas available, and nearby sits Konoba Feral, known for homemade dishes and fish specialties, plus a few smaller cafés for coffee or a light snack.

What I love about Podrače is that intimate feeling you get – it's like you've discovered your own private little corner of the coast. The rocks create natural walls on both sides, and the water is so clear you can see every pebble on the bottom. It's perfect for those days when you want to disconnect completely, read a book, and just listen to the gentle lapping of waves against the shore.

2. Podrače, Brela

3. Nikolina, Baška Voda

Nikolina is the main beach of Baška Voda and proudly flies the Blue Flag. Long, pebbly, with white pebbles and crystal-clear water. The gentle entry into the sea makes it ideal for children and elderly visitors. The long promenade along the beach, the natural shade from pines and tamarisks, and the many amenities – sun loungers, umbrellas, pedal boats, showers, playgrounds – guarantee a pleasant stay.

Nearby are numerous cafés and restaurants; I personally recommend Bistro Karlo for lunch and Kavana Matrioska for morning coffee or ice cream. You can park in the town center, and thanks to the well-built cycling paths, getting there by bike is easy.

Baška Voda itself has this wonderful laid-back vibe that I always appreciate. After a morning swim at Nikolina, I love taking a leisurely stroll along the promenade, maybe grabbing a gelato, and just watching the boats come and go. The beach is long enough that even on busy days, you can usually find a spot that feels like your own.

3. Nikolina, Baška Voda

4. Slatina, Tučepi

Slatina is the longest beach on the Makarska Riviera – four kilometers stretching along a promenade lined with pines and tamarisks providing shade. Pebbly, with a gentle entry into the sea, ideal for families with children, but also for athletes and cyclists. There are pedal boats, water slides, sun loungers, umbrellas, and parents can enjoy coffee at one of the nearby cafés while the kids play.

Many bars and restaurants are nearby, like Bistro Rosos and Ankora, known for Mediterranean dishes and fish specialties. On Slatina, you'll also find numerous other offerings: pedal boats, water slides, beach bars, and sports courts.

What makes Slatina special for me is that you can literally spend an entire day there without getting bored. The promenade is perfect for a morning jog or evening walk, and the variety of activities means everyone in the family finds something they enjoy. I've spent countless afternoons there just people-watching, swimming, and enjoying the long, lazy Mediterranean hours that seem to stretch forever.

4. Slatina, Tučepi

5. Nugal, Makarska

Nugal is my absolute insider tip for adventurers and nature lovers. This pebble beach lies in a hidden cove between tall cliffs and dense forest. The entry into the sea is somewhat steeper, the water gets deep quickly, but it's incredibly clear. You can only reach Nugal on foot, through the Osejava park forest from Makarska or Tučepi (about a 30-minute walk), or by bike to the park forest entrance. Parking is available in Makarska.

The water is extremely clean, but there's neither natural shade nor any food and drink facilities – so definitely bring water and snacks! Nugal is perfect for anyone wanting to get away from the crowds and enjoy a natural setting. It's also known as a nudist beach, but basically, everyone seeking peace and nature is welcome.

The hike to Nugal is half the experience. Walking through that pine forest, with glimpses of the sea between the trees, builds anticipation with every step. And then you emerge from the shade into this hidden cove, surrounded by cliffs, with water so clear it looks like liquid glass. It's one of those places that reminds you why you fell in love with the Adriatic in the first place. Just remember to pack everything you need – there are no beach bars or shops to bail you out if you forget sunscreen or water.

5. Nugal, Makarska

6. Donja Luka, Makarska

Donja Luka is the most famous city beach in Makarska, several kilometers long, pebbly, with a gentle entry into the sea and natural shade from the pines. The beach is suitable for families, but also for young people and adventurers because of the various activities: pedal boats, water slides, sports courts, children's playgrounds, and a rich gastronomic selection.

Nearby are many cafés and restaurants, particularly noteworthy are Tempera Streetfood & Bar for a quick bite and Restoran Matteo for lunch right by the sea. There are several public parking lots nearby, but during peak season it can get tight. The entire length of the promenade is accessible by bike.

Donja Luka has this great energy that I really enjoy – it's lively without being overwhelming. You can join a beach volleyball game, rent a jet ski, or just lay back and watch the world go by. The variety of food options means you can grab anything from a quick burger to a proper seafood dinner without leaving the beach area. And when the sun starts to set, the promenade comes alive with people out for their evening passeggiata.

7. Cvitačka, Makarska

Cvitačka is my quieter alternative to the city beach. It consists of several smaller pebble coves separated by rocks. Surrounded by pine forest providing natural shade, with a gentle entry and clean water. The beach is suitable for couples and those seeking peace, but also for families with smaller children.

Parking is available nearby, from where you walk down. You can also get there by bike or scooter via a wide gravel road. At the beach are beach bars, like Beach Bar Buba, where you can enjoy cocktails or a light meal. Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented, and part of the beach is also designated for pets.

I discovered Cvitačka almost by accident a few years back, and it's become my go-to spot when I want something more low-key. The way the rocks divide the beach into these little private-feeling sections is just perfect. Each cove has its own character, and you can hop between them to find your favorite. The pine trees come right down to the water's edge in places, creating these natural canopy spots that are pure magic on a hot afternoon.

7. Cvitačka, Makarska

8. Gornja Vala, Drvenik

The longest beach in Drvenik lies in the shade of the pines and offers everything you need for a family vacation – a pebble shore with gentle entry, a children's playground, a water park, and wheelchair-accessible access. The crystal-clear water is additionally refreshed by the "Sweet Water" spring, and the proximity to the promenade, bars, and restaurants completes the true Mediterranean atmosphere.

Drvenik has this wonderfully authentic feel that I always appreciate – it's less touristy than some of the bigger towns, and Gornja Vala reflects that. The spring of fresh water mixing with the salt sea is a unique natural feature that you don't find everywhere. It's the kind of beach where local families have been coming for generations, and that tradition gives it a special warmth and welcoming atmosphere.

9. Velika Duba, Živogošće

Velika Duba is a hidden cove surrounded by pines, far from the hustle and bustle and settlements. The beach is often called "Dubai Beach" because of its beauty, curves inward creating a truly special atmosphere, and the water is exceptionally clean. The entry is gentle, but there isn't much natural shade, so bringing a sun umbrella is recommended.

The beach is ideal for those seeking peace, privacy, and an escape from the crowds, as well as for adventurers who love exploring lesser-known coves. To get to Velika Duba in Živogošće, you can park for free along the main road. If you're feeling adventurous, take the goat path through the forest from Blato or from Mala Duba along the coast. The beach can be suitable for nudists, especially outside the season, but that mostly depends on the visitors on any given day. There aren't many facilities on the beach, except for one beach bar during the season, so it's best to bring your own food and drinks.

Getting to Velika Duba feels like a proper expedition, and that's part of its charm. Whether you take the coastal path with the sea crashing against the rocks below, or the forest trail with pine needles underfoot, you feel like you're discovering something special. And when you finally emerge onto that curved pebble shore, with the cliffs rising on both sides and the water stretching out before you in impossible shades of blue, you know the journey was worth every step. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stepped out of time for a while.

9. Velika Duba, Živogošće

10. Dugi rat, Brela

Dugi rat is a well-maintained pebble beach with plenty of greenery and natural shade, peaceful and perfect for relaxing. The entry into the sea is gentle and safe, making it suitable for families with children, but also for couples seeking quiet. Parking is nearby, and by bike you can get almost to the beach itself, with only the final stretch on foot.

Nearby are a few smaller cafés and konobas, and for an authentic experience, I recommend Konoba Ivandica Dvori in the old part of Brela.

Dugi rat has this lovely, unpretentious quality that I really appreciate. It's not trying to be the most famous or the most spectacular – it just quietly does its job of being a beautiful, comfortable place to spend a day by the sea. The old town of Brela nearby adds to the charm, and wandering up to Konoba Ivandica Dvori for dinner after a day at the beach feels like the perfect way to end a perfect day. The combination of good food, local wine, and the satisfaction of a day well spent is hard to beat.

10. Dugi rat, Brela

Have you visited any of these beaches yourself, or are you currently planning your next trip to the Makarska Riviera? Each of these spots has its own personality, and depending on what you're looking for – family fun, romantic seclusion, or adventurous exploration – there's definitely a perfect beach waiting for you along this stunning stretch of coast.
