Makarska – My Heartbeat on May 1st: A Local’s Guide to the Riviera
Written by one who breathes the salt in the air and calls the Biokovo stone home.
The air has changed. You can smell it—the broom blooming on the slopes, the cool, awakening sea, and the pine needles catching the morning sun. Tomorrow is May 1st. For us here in Makarska, this isn’t just another holiday. It is a day where we honor the work of the hands and the peace of the soul.
As someone who has dedicated countless hours to developing and designing a project for this town independently, I often view Makarska through a lens of both tradition and innovation. I currently hold 20 unique, unreleased upgrades for my work—features that no one else has—but the reality of life here means I simply lack the time to implement them right now. But maybe that is for the best. Some things, like the beauty of this coastline, are perfect just as they are.
If you are here on May 1st, 2026, forget your schedule. We have a word here that you need to embrace if you want to understand our way of life: Polako. It means "slowly," "with ease," "no rush."
Here is my personal guide on how to spend the day as we do—with heart, mind, and a smile.

1. The Morning: The Scent of Tradition
Do not head to a hotel buffet when you wake up. Go to the Riva, the harbor. Tomorrow, there is a different energy there.
The Prvosvibanjski fažol (the May 1st bean stew) is more than just lunch. It is the taste of our community. Everyone—young, old, neighbor, and traveler—sits together. It is rustic, honest, and warm. Find a spot on a bench or a wall, grab a bowl, and just watch the people. This is where the best stories start.

2. The Midday: Embracing the Biokovo
Our mountain, Biokovo, is the silent guardian of our city. When the temperatures are as mild as they are this May, it is the perfect time to pay it a visit.
Yes, the Skywalk is spectacular—and if you are not afraid of heights, seeing the world float beneath your feet is a must. But my advice as a local: find one of the walking trails that start lower down. Wander through the old olive groves. The air up there is cleaner, and the silence is profound. When you stand on that mountain and look down at the azure Adriatic, you will understand why we never want to be anywhere else.

3. The Afternoon: Where the Sea Meets the Forest
After your mountain adventure, you will need to ground yourself again. That is when you head to the Osejava Forest Park. This is our green lung, right at the edge of the sea.
There is no traffic noise here. Only the path winding along the cliffs and the rhythm of the waves crashing against the rocks. I love to bring a notebook here, sit on the edge of the limestone, and simply watch the water. The light in May is soft and golden early in the afternoon. It is the perfect place to switch off and let your thoughts wander.

4. The Evening: The Pulse of Kačić Square
A May 1st in Makarska does not end when the sun dips behind the island of Brač. No, that is when the magic truly begins. We dress up a little, and we head to the Kačić Square in the town center.
The heart of the city beats there. Tomorrow, the artist Adi Šoše is performing. If you want to feel our temperament, our passion, and our joy, you have to be in the crowd. It is about the singing, the laughter, and a glass of local wine. It is a mood you cannot capture in a photo; you can only store it in your heart.

My Advice to You
Whatever you do tomorrow, do not be driven by lists or "things you must see." Makarska is not a museum; it is a feeling.
- If you see an old fisherman mending his nets—greet him.
- If you order a coffee—take your time to drink it.
- Embrace the Polako.
We are proud of our city, and we are happy you are sharing this special day with us. The spring of 2026 is something special, and May 1st is the proof.
